Chinese Cinnabar Lacquer Trinket Box

Carved red lacquer ware, commonly known as cinnabar lacquer, represents one of the most labor-intensive and enduring traditions in Asian decorative arts. Artisans applied dozens to hundreds of individual layers of pigmented lacquer onto a core made of wood or metal, allowing each layer to cure before applying the next. Once the desired thickness was achieved, master carvers cut intricate designs into the soft yet resilient layers, often utilizing traditional motifs such as peonies, landscapes, and geometric diaper grounds.

Historically centered in workshops across China, this meticulous craft reached extraordinary heights during the Ming and Qing dynasties before continuing into the twentieth century in modified forms. The intense red color was traditionally derived from powdered cinnabar mineral mixed into the lacquer sap, though later pieces frequently substituted safer synthetic pigments while retaining the classic appearance. These boxes served primarily as decorative containers for scholars, literati, and affluent households, prized for both their tactile texture and symbolic wishes for wealth and longevity.
