Antique Royal Doulton Bowl/Madras Pattern

The 'Madras' pattern was produced by Royal Doulton at their Burslem works in Staffordshire, England, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This style of transferware reflects the Victorian fascination with exotic Eastern motifs, combining intricate architectural elements with lush floral borders. Such pieces were mass-produced using copper-plate transfer printing onto earthenware blanks, a technique that allowed for exquisite fine-line detail.

Royal Doulton grew from a modest pottery founded by John Doulton in 1815 into one of the most prolific and celebrated ceramic manufacturers in the British Empire. The addition of the Royal Warrant by King Edward VII in 1901 permitted the company to adopt the Royal Doulton name and crest on their backstamps. Tableware items featuring Chinoiserie designs like Madras were staples of middle-class dining rooms, prized for both their durability and decorative charm.
