The iconic Hummel figurines trace their artistic origins to the drawings of Franciscan nun Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel, whose charming depictions captured the public's heart during the 1930s. Master sculptor Arthur Moeller translated these illustrations into three-dimensional ceramics after the W. Goebel Porzellanfabrik secured exclusive production rights in 1935.

To expand their product lines, Goebel frequently adapted popular sculptural designs like the Flower Madonna into functional items such as nightlights and lamps. These electrified versions featured internal bulb holders and specialized openings to cast a warm, ambient glow through the translucent white bisque porcelain. Such lighted devotional pieces became popular mid-century accessories, blending religious sentiment with practical home illumination.
