Antique Limoges Cabinet Plate Featuring Hand-Painted Cherub

The production of decorative porcelain cabinet plates flourished in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly in the famed porcelain manufacturing hub of Limoges, France. Numerous independent studios and major factories operated in the region, blank porcelain being decorated with intricate gilding, embossed molding, and romantic central transfer prints. Motifs featuring cherubs and putti were immensely popular, drawing inspiration from Rococo art and classical revival aesthetics.

These pieces were primarily designed for display in drawing rooms and parlors rather than for dining, serving as symbols of bourgeois refinement and taste. The application of heavy gold leaf along scalloped rims combined with delicate pastel grounds defined the opulent style of the Belle Époque era. Today, surviving examples remain cherished by collectors of antique European porcelain and decorative cabinet wares.
