Antique French Art Nouveau Cast Metal Jardiniere & Mirrored Plateau Set

The Art Nouveau movement swept through European decorative arts at the turn of the twentieth century, bringing organic, flowing lines inspired by natural forms into domestic interiors. French foundries were particularly prolific in producing ornamental cast iron and spelter table centerpieces known as surtout de table, often combining mirrored plateaus with elaborate jardiniere planters. These ensembles were designed to anchor formal dining tables, frequently adorned with motifs of scrolling foliage, water lilies, and asymmetrical cartouches.

Crafted using advanced casting techniques of the period, these decorative metalwares were often given a gilt, bronzed, or patinated finish to simulate richer metals like solid bronze. Fabrication Francaise and various Parisian foundries exported thousands of such luxury table ornaments worldwide, catering to an affluent middle class eager to display artistic taste in their dining rooms. Today, surviving sets that retain both their original planter and matching mirrored plateau are increasingly prized by collectors of turn-of-the-century interior ornamentation.
