Chinese Cinnabar Ginger Jar

Cinnabar lacquerware is a traditional Chinese art form that involves applying dozens to hundreds of layers of pigmented lacquer over a core made of brass, wood, or bronze. Once the layers have dried completely, artisans carve intricate landscapes, floral motifs, or figures directly into the hardened material, revealing the depth and richness of the layered buildup.

During the early 20th century, Chinese workshops produced a significant quantity of such carved lacquer vessels, often featuring distinctive bright blue enamel interiors and applied brass rims. These pieces were created both for domestic utility and export markets, continuing centuries-old imperial traditions while adapting to international tastes for decorative Asian arts.
